 ■ ポリテクの歴史

In 1919, the late Mr George Chaloner started Mechanical Engineering classes for some young men working on his farm Hubert Davies & Co.As more young men applied to join his classes, he prevailed upon the Government for assistance.

In 1925 , the Government agreed to start regular classes in the Old Boys High School (Prince Edward High School) and the first Advisory Council was appointed. In 1926 the Salisbury Technical School opened in the Caledonian Hall with Mr Richard Dreary as the first Principal. In 1936 Mr Chaloner led a deputation to Sir Ernest Guest to appeal to Government for a permanent site to establish a college. A site between Fourth and Fifth Street was acquired and the Polytechnic was completed just before the Second World War. With the post-war boom, this building soon became inadequate. In 1936 the Commerce Department and some of the workshop staff moved into the Old Selbourne School in Prince Edward Street.

The new Polytechnic was completed in January 1964 at a cost of $270 000.00 and opened with an enrollment of 1500 students with Mr L.H Davies as the Principal. He was succeeded by Mr EJ Bacon when he became the Director of Technical Education in 1964.

The year 1965 was an eventful year in the history of the college. In January the first library opened, in September, the first black students were enrolled. The Polytechnic was officially opened by Sir Humphrey Gibbs , the Governor in October 1965.

Harare Polytechnic recognizes the need for continuous development of professional and patriotic graduates equipped with high quality skills required in spearheading the transformation of the Zimbabwean economy into self-sufficiency. A critical prerequisite for this human resource development is the creation of a humane and enabling environment, in which students have the opportunity to develop and reach their full potential.

I would like to take this opportunity to share and outline Harare Polytechnic's vision and mission in our endeavor to produce a high quality graduate.

We are committed to developing a “competitive patriotic graduate with high quality technopreneurial, production, research and consultancy skills”.

・Patriotic Graduate: - all our students are required to undertake National Strategic Studies, a compulsory subject, which is designed to instill a sense of patriotism and to nurture a valuable sense of nationalistic pride in all of our graduates.

・High quality technopreneurial and production skills: - all our students are introduced to entrepreneurship concepts and are also equipped with industrial oriented production skills.

・High quality research and consultancy skills: - We recognize that there is a need to produce a graduate capable of developing and or providing products/services using local raw materials and introducing appropriate technology that will help turn around the Zimbabwean economy into self-sufficiency. Thus the students are required to carryout a research project that is industry oriented and students will spend a considerable amount of time carrying out the research project.

One very famous motivational writer once wrote: “ There is no hope of success for the person who does not have a central purpose, or definite goal at which to aim”. Thus as an institution, we recognize the need for our students to have a purpose and a goal.

I trust that you will all find a fertile, stimulating and humane environment suitable for personal growth and development at this institution.

 ■ Examination Tips(試験についての注意)

 注意書きが結構細かく書いてあり、面白いので載せてみました。読んでみて下さい。

I. Preparation

Study in small groups

Make sure your study group contains only students who are serious about studying. At least some of them should be at your level of ability or better.

Go over as many different problems as you can (like old homework problems, unassigned problems in the course text, and problems on old exams). Set up the solutions, but don't crunch numbers. Don't leave a problem until you're convinced you could do it by yourself.

Brainstorm possible things you could be asked and answers you might give.

Leave the beer in the refrigerator until you're done studying.

Make up a crib sheet as though you were going to cheat on a closed-book exam. If the test is closed-book, know what's on the sheet. If it's open-book, bring the sheet with you.

Don't stay up all night studying. Try to get a reasonable amount of sleep the night before the exam. If that's not possible, try to get a nap before the exam, or at least a short rest.

Set up a backup system for your alarm clock. Set a second alarm, or arrange for a wake-up call from a friend.

Arrange for backup transportation to campus.

Bring everything you need to the exam:
textbook/lecture notes if the exam is open book
paper and several pencils with erasers
calculator with extra batteries
allowed handbooks and tables (such as steam tables)
allowed class handouts
crib sheets (if allowed)

II. Taking the test

Read over the whole exam before beginning to write anything.

Choose the problem or question that seems easiest to you and do it first. Continue to do the problems in order of increasing difficulty.

STAY IN MOTION!!! Work on a problem until you get stuck. Think about it for a minute or two, and if nothing comes to you then drop it and go on to another problem. Don't spend 30 minutes sweating out an additional five points on a problem and run out of time, leaving a 40-point problem untouched. You may later have time to return to the first one and you're much more likely to think of how to do it then.

Show your work. Give enough detail so that both you and the grader can tell what you're trying to do. Even if you can do the problem in your head, don't. If you're wrong, you get a zero; if you're right, you could be suspected of cheating.

Watch out for significant figures. Some instructors don't appreciate answers like 23.694028, even if that's what the calculator says.

Think partial credit. Try to put something down for each part of every problem/question. If you don't have time to solve a problem completely, tell what you'd do if you had more time.

Keep your work legible. If an instructor can't read what you wrote, you aren't likely to get full credit and you may not get any.

If you don't understand a question, ask the instructor/proctor for help. You might get some, and it never hurts to try.

Don't panic. If you feel yourself sweating or hyperventilating, put down your pencil, close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and consciously relax any muscles that you're clenching (jaw, neck, stomach). When you're calmer, go back to work.

If you have time at the end, check your solutions. Did you answer each part of every question? Did you answer the question(s) asked? Do your answers look reasonable? Do your calculations check out? (Save this one for last.)

Hand in your paper when time is called. Nothing makes an instructor/proctor more homicidal than having to wrestle you to the floor to get your paper.
